Column Squeeze, Leeza Meksin's new site-specific installation, continues the artist's ongoing exploration of our bodies' relationship to architecture, especially institutional spaces of power. While Ionic columns allude to Western Hellenistic heritage that we still witness in the buildings around us today, in Meksin's treatment they simultaneously bring to mind breasts, eyes and tire tracks. The fleshy and stretchy neoprene and the swirling watery dye furthers the dysmorphic relationship between our soft and ever-changing bodies and the stately permanence that columns imply.
