As the Years Went On..., is part of the ongoing photographic project titled In the Movies by Ricardo de Oliveira.
The work is comprised of fragmented photographic details taken from movie advertisements installed in New York City’s subway stations, and includes an intrigue of words and notes from various conversations overhead while riding the subway.
As the Years Went On… echoes the romantic Brazilian fotonovelas of the 1960’s and 70’s. A long forgotten popular genre format, known for their urban narratives portraying the "sweet smell of success" - filled with passion, suspense and greed, often featuring ambitious, opportunistic and alluring villains. The fotonovelas were easy entertainment, the perfect working-class palliative to help distract from the harsh political days that consumed the country through the two decades.
